Engagement Shoot on Cass Lake

Overpowering the sun with a budget friendly lighting setup.

Blazing hot sun and hardly a cloud in the sky; fantastic summer weather but less than ideal for a photoshoot. But we can't be blessed with the brilliantly soft lighting of a bright & overcast day everyday right? For me, having off-camera lighting with high speed sync is a life saver in these situations and paves the way for some beautifully dramatic image possibilities.

For this particular shoot I used the following: (click for links to Amazon)

The Godox light is only 200W but it is extremely compact and fantastic even in full sun. For this particular shot I wanted to used the sun as a hair light so I positioned the couple with the sun behind them. I then positioned the strobe (inside the brolly box at full power) about 2 feet right in front of them. I then crouched down and shot from literally right underneath the light. I chose the upward angle for drama and big sky.

After some basic edits including some cropping, color adjustments, and retouching, VOILA! A nice dramatic image in the full sun with a pretty budget friendly setup.
